Florida Caverns State Park
While making our way out of Florida, we came across Florida Caverns State Park. Naturally, after being at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky, we had to see what the caverns in Florida had in store. Nestled in a small town in Marianna, Florida holds a true gem that if given the opportunity, you should check out. Although small in comparison to Mammoth, these caverns pack a punch.
When your entering the cave, you can hear the sounds of dripping water while walking down 50 or so steps. Once you hit the bottom, the fun begins. The cave itself takes you down 35-50 feet, but you are immediately surrounded by tons of stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. The cave winds around bends while you duck and squeeze through the different chambers. It was stunning to see so much at once in the caves. There are fossils in the ceiling from fish when the caves were full with water, including a shark tooth! We even saw crawfish that were living in the small amount of water that is still in the cave today.
Even though we only got to spend a few hours at the park, it was well worth it. The park also offers so many more amenities that we didn’t get to experience. From boating, camping, paddling, tours and boating, there is a lot to do. Our next stop is New Orleans, Louisiana. Lets go! Photos are below.
